This page is to support families with questions around Flinders Online Learning - particularly in relation to Technology. 

A section in the Flinders Online Learning Guide lists contact phone numbers and email addresses for each campus sub-school. Parents should be encouraged to contact their section of the school when seeking assistance.

Flinders Online Learning

titleHow will Flinders Online Learning work?

An overview is explained here in the Flinders Online Learning Guide, including information on daily routines, Zoom video conferencing, online protocols for students, and campus contact details.

titleWhere do I find the work that my child should be learning?

Learning instruction and resources will primarily be provided via our existing online platform, Moodle. All Students and Parents/Guardians are assigned a login/password to access Moodle and other Flinders systems. Specific information for Year Levels can be found in the Flinders Online Learning Guide.

titleHow can I view my child's Online Learning Timetable?

Primary school students will participate in a program specifically tailored for online learning. Please refer to the Flinders Online Learning Guide for an outline.

Secondary students will be operating with a normal subject Timetable while learning from home.

titleHow do I mark my child's attendance for Flinders Online Learning?

Primary school students must visit Moodle to indicate they are 'attending' Flinders Online Learning. Parents may need to assist younger children to login to Moodle with their Student user name and password and mark their attendance.

NOTE: Teachers will mark attendance for Secondary Students.

titleCan I just send my child to school?

Per the State Government directive for Term 2, if students can learn from home, they must learn from home. Exceptions are allowed where parents are essential workers or cannot make the necessary care arrangements.

Zoom Video Conferencing

titleWhat is Zoom Video Conferencing?

Zoom video-conferencing allows students to connect with their teachers and classmates in a live setting. It will be used frequently during each week to touch base, explain concepts, participate in classroom conversations, and direct the learning. Resources and activities will be accessible on Moodle Course pages, but Zoom will provide the touch-point for face-to-face connection.

Flinders Logins and Passwords

titleWhat is my password?

Information about Parent Account passwords may be found via this Flinders Knowledge Base page, including:

titleWhat are my children's passwords?

All students have been allocated a Flinders login name and password for use at school. Information about student passwords may be found via this Flinders Knowledge Base article directed to the students themselves.

The format of the student login name is 'bgates20', usually the first initial of their christian name, followed by surname, following by a two digit number representing the year they will reach Year 12.

If a student has forgotten their password or login details, families will need to contact the Campus Sub-school to request a password reset. Contact phone numbers are listed in the Flinders Online Learning Guide.

For younger children in Years Prep to Grade 2, Flinders has recently sent a letter home to parents listing their children's login names and information about passwords.

titleI have logged in but something is not working

Flinders logins provide access to multiple systems via Single sign-on (SSO). This works across Zoom, Moodle, Community Portal, Microsoft Office and G-Suite (Google Apps).

If a Parent logs in to say Community Portal with their own Flinders login credentials, then a student tries to access Moodle on the same computer, Moodle may remember the Parent login and access as a parent. (Even though Moodle is a different application to Community Portal.)

The reverse is also true if a Parent uses the same computer after a Student has logged in.

The solution is to first navigate to Moodle (; click on the name of the current user displayed in the top right-hand corner; then select logout from the drop-down menu. Once logged out, you should shutdown the internet browser in use (eg. Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) to clear memory of the previous user. Reopening your browser and navigating to a Flinders system, the user will this time be prompted for their own login and password.

Google Email and Moodle Messaging

titleWhat is my child's email address?

Each student has a Flinders email address for G-suite (Google Apps)

Moodle messaging allows communication between Students/Parents and the Teachers.

Internet Access

titleI don't have home internet

Access to the internet will of course be required for Flinders Online Learning. Families may have non-existent or unreliable home internet, accessing email and internet only via mobile phones, or at work. Some families may have home internet but quite limited data plans.

Flinders would recommend the following:

  1. Home Internet: Where possible, we would encourage you to contact a Internet Service Provider (Telstra, AussieBroadband, TPG, for example) to arrange connection. The WhistleOut website is a good comparison website to help you choose.
  2. Wifi Modem: If not available or feasible, some homes have purchased 4G wifi modems. These connect to the internet just like a mobile phone with a SIM card and a Data plan. They can work in certain situations but with a data plan can be just as expensive as home internet. (See this website for an explanation of how they work.)
    NB: These are extremely scarce to purchase at present, due to many households working and learning from home.
  3. Hotspotting: Similar to a 4G wifi modem, your child's laptop can connect to the internet via your mobile phone's 'hotspot' capabilities. Please understand that this can use a lot of data and battery on your phone. We recommend that you plug your phone into a charger while 'hotspotting' and ensure you have a robust data plan.
    NB: Zoom Video Conferencing may use around 1Gb of data per hour.
  4. On-campus supervision: If you cannot arrange internet from home, your final alternative is to send your children to school to use technology on-campus.

titleHow do I connect to my home internet?

titleMy internet is slow / not working

If your internet is slower that usual, it could be congestion in your area for a time. If persistently slow, or the problem doesn't resolve over time, then we recommend you first contact your internet provider and place a support call. 

If you cannot resolve the problem, then please refer to the FAQ above - "I don't have home internet"

titleI think I may exceed my monthly data plan

For families with a limited data plan on their home (or mobile) internet. we would recommend you approach your provider to upgrade your plan.

If you are unable to upgrade or connect to adequate home internet or would like to discuss further, please contact the College with your concerns or questions. We would value an opportunity to assist.

Laptops, Mobile Devices and Software

titleI don't have a laptop for my child

All Year 7 to 12 students should have a BYOD laptop for use at Flinders, which is perfectly suitable for use for Flinders Online Learning.

Where your child attends the Primary School or does have a functioning BYOD laptop, and you cannot arrange for a suitable computer at home, you may apply for a loan laptop from Flinders.

A short note detailing your circumstances and request

  • Campus
  • Student names and year levels
  • /laptop-loan to complete an application form. Please be sure to complete all fields carefully to allow us to contact you with collection details.

    NOTE: For some upper Primary year levels, all students may be directed to take home the school laptop they use in the classroom. You will not need to request a laptop if you are in this category. Please refer to the specific communication emailed to you at the announcement of a particular school lockdown for which year levels this will apply.  

    titleCan my children use a desktop PC or iPad, instead of a laptop?

    A desktop PC or iPad or combination, may well be adequate for Flinders Online Learning. If students can access email, Moodle, and participate in Zoom video-conferencing, that may suffice.

    The benefit of a laptop is the built-in webcam for Zoom Video-conferencing. A desktop computer could work by connecting a separate webcam. Either of these options allows students to connect to their teachers online, while simultaneously sharing what is displayed on their computer screen. (eg. A document or presentation)

    Zoom Apps are available for iPad, iPhone and Android devices. This would allow participation in a Zoom meeting with your child's teacher and classmates, but screen sharing may be much more difficult. 

    titleMy child's laptop is damaged / not working

    Software Applications

    titleHow do I obtain and install software on a student device?

    Flinders licences a range of software for students to install on BYOD and home devices. There is no cost to families for Microsoft Office. Eligibility criteria applies for Adobe software.
